Abstract

Cholera is a disease of multicausal origin involving biological, environmental, social, political and cultural factors. It is an acute intestinal infection caused by the ingestion of Vibrio cholerae, a bacterium presents in water and food contaminated by fecal matter, representing a permanent risk in several countries. This disease is re-emerging as a major health problem in many countries. The greatest risk is observed in overpopulated communities and localities with poor sanitary conditions; hence the need to develop strong health promotion in society to eradicate it and ensure prompt attention to the sick. Clinical manifestations may be mild, moderate or severe. Doxycycline is the elective antibiotic therapy, but the most important is that which prevents dehydration. However, adequate hygienic education of the population is essential for its elimination. This bibliographic research aims to characterize cholera in Ghana by reviewing 41 bibliographic sources (16) published in the last 5 years.
